KARAT CHOCOLATE

KARAT is a small, family-run company located in beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia. 

Award-winning chocolates and confectionary — hand-made and crafted with care. We use both the finest couverture chocolates, fair trade, and organic cacao beans from around the globe together with the finest local ingredients available.

Founded in 2016, KARAT came out of humble beginnings in the basement kitchen of West Kelowna’s Mission Hill Winery. With a few 3kg bags of chocolate, simple tools, a box of craft paper, and a stamp, KARAT was created. With the support of friends, family, colleagues, and a caring community, the dream began to sustainably grow.

Over the last few years, KARAT has been focused on quality and building blasting partnerships — offering exclusive chocolate at an exemplary price while providing an artistic outlet for young chefs and chocolatiers. KARAT:

  • uses local ingredients
  • sources the best single origin or couverture chocolate possible
  • commits to finding beans that are ethically sourced and of the highest quality

KARAT has received multiple national accolades and awards since its establishment. KARAT operates out of ah humble retail store, and promises to continue wowing customers in and around the Okanagan Valley.

Chocolatier

Julian Helman, pastry chef, chocolatier, and owner/operator of KARAT is driven to create. His French training has had a profound impact on his work over the past 15 years – it has proven to be the foundation of his creations, not just in style and technique of his work, but also in its philosophy. Food is more than just food to Julian. Good food can be something special when made with care. 

Julian completed his formal culinary and pastry training at the Canadian Culinary Institute of Canada in Charlottetown, P.E.I. and further refined his chocolate and pastry skills at the famed French Pastry School in Chicago, USA. Over the course of his career, he has worked a wide range of positions in various establishments, from Michelin-starred fine dining restaurants in Europe and Asia, hotels, pastry shops, bakeries, and restaurants.

Julian uses his years of experience and training from both savoury and sweet perspectives to conceptualize and craft unique  chocolates and pastries using local ingredients. Julian’s love for travel, nature, art, architecture, and design can be seen in works displayed in his shop.
